Ah, new life about to unfurl. Did you know that these are actually the branches of the plant? The stem is underground and horizontal. Two years of botany at university feels one with such information for moments like this!!!!! Nice shot. Cheers, Dave
Mary MacADNski: I din't know it exactly like that but I know new ferns grow from underground rhisomes (sp) or something like that a couple of feet away from parents. I love ferns and my favorite word in French is fougere which means fern I don't know why.
You know I've learned so much coming to your blog tonight! I grew up next to a huge pine forest and would look forward to each spring and the baby ferns rearing their heads through the dead bracken of the previous year; those soft downy stems and that lush green colour that one minute wasn't there and then all of a sudden seemed to take over.
Your image works really well with that red/rust contrast - and you've brought back many childhood memories of playing in the woods.
Mary MacADNski: My favorite childhood memories are also of playing in the woods....gone all day with orders to be back for supper. Such adventures!
Oh yes! A sure sign that spring has arrived. I always think these look wonderful, and your picture shows them at their best. I do like the background too.
Mary MacADNski: My friends are renovating their porch rhis year and these may get trampled or moved. I'm glad I got this photo now.
