photoblog image Cactus Fruit or Flower

Cactus Fruit or Flower

Enough with the snow for awhile.  Back to sunny Florida.  I thought these cactus fruits or flowers were very interesting.  They look like slightly blown balloons. They burst after ripening and drop fibrous guck and seeds.

Seriously pretty cactus, Mary.

Cactus often have colourful fruits, and this one is certainly no exception.
Mary MacADNski: Some have flowers so I kept waitint for this to burst forth in bloom. It burst forth in gunk instead.
They look as if they have been stuck on by someone!
Mary MacADNski: They do. They were across the road from where I walked and I passed them every day thinking just that.
A wonderful cheering up image Mary!
Mary MacADNski: Nice and bright and something to really look at.

Mary MacADNski: I'm getting tired of the snow, Astrid.

Do you know how long these things last for, Mary? Sometimes they come and go very quickly.
Mary MacADNski: They seemed to last quite a while.

It looks like you missed the flowering. The second one from the top looks like it has a dead flower hanging from it.
Mary MacADNski: I would say you're right, Cath. I kept looking at it from across the street and yard so got brave one day and crossed the street. I saw then that it was the fruit. If you're at home call me.
I like the cracking flowers and the ooze from them. Wonderful colour.
Mary MacADNski: I thought it was a fantastic sight.
I think it's the very first time I see that !
Mary MacADNski: We don't see cactus growing outside here either.

Never seen anything like it before Mary
Mary MacADNski: I thought at first it was little balloon decorations.
