A soon as I stopped my car, these geese began their retreat. Again, like a warm winter a few years ago, some birds have decided to overwinter here rather than migrate to warmer climates. I've specifically noticed large numbers of starlings who have stayed.

we don't have any overwintering here, it was so cold for so long. Finally warming up. Before they all left town, we'd see them in the farmer's field across the way, but never close enough that I could get a good shot.
Mary MacADNski: It is -8 today and has been cool like this for a day or two but we're going back to -2 and 3 tomorrow. Unusual and no big snow storms yet. There was one but it turned to rain.
I wonder if birds are better a predicting the weather than our met. offices? We were told that we would have a "milder than normal winter"; turned out that we've had the coldest for 30 years!
Mary MacADNski: I don't think anyone is very good at predicting weather. I have seen birds become stranded in ice and feel sorry for birds that stay then have a difficult time surviving.
If your neighbor in the South does not make a serious policy to alleviate the effects of pollution, you are going to be very difficult to return to normal .
Mary MacADNski: You are absolutely correct but our prime minister is much like our neighbour and not moving very fast.
Still a good shot despite the retreat Mary. Have you noticed how our Australian friends can't quite concieve the idea of cold winters
Mary MacADNski: I went to college with a girl who had come to the Maritimes in an arranged marriage. She came from Malasia and had no idea what to expect. She sat in the classroom all winter with sweaters, mittens, a hat and a scarf. I felt very sorry for her.
