Mary MacADNski: Goldfinches are sweet little birds. He's wearing his winter coat but by spring his bright yellow head will appear, bringing colour to the trees.
He looks quite a bit different from our goldfinches which have a red face. Lovely bird portrait. Our birds have been having a tough time of it recently with the snow - a lot of these have been coming to our garden to feed on the seeds we put out.

Mary MacADNski: Goldfinches overwinter here and come on flocks of 40 or 50. They are very sweet and completely trusting of the cats who have been trained not to bother the birds. Unlike chickaddes however, I can not get them to eat from my hand.
An attractive little bird. I've not heard of an American Goldfinch before and my research now tells me that this is a female, jusging by the colourings. I hope she was rewarded for the pose.
Mary MacADNski: The males and females are alike in winter. Only the males get the bright yellow heads in spring.
