photoblog image Four Fine Fiinches

Four Fine Fiinches

The American Goldfinch male has a bright yellow head in summer but in winter looks much like the female. The bird on the left is male.  The two in the right are female and I'm unsure of the one in the middle.

A squirrel keeps removing the perches from this feeder.  I've been using pens to replace them but the pens are disappearing as well.  I'm now using wooden skewers.

The one in the middle seems unsure of its status, too, Mary...perhaps it flies either way...

You should consider continuing with pens...perhaps the squirrel is writing an Opus...
Mary MacADNski: There are countless pens missing so the opus can continue. Thank you so much for making an identification of the bird in the middle.

Bit of superglue will equal one frustrated squirrel lol
Mary MacADNski: I was thinking of using twist ties to keep them in one place. If I had superglue, I would use it on the squirrel.

Mary MacADNski: It was certainly difficult posing and arranging them. Took me hours.

Delightful Mary :0
Mary MacADNski: Delightful for you to say so. Thank you!
Lovely picture, and lovely birds.
Mary MacADNski: Thanks, Sheila. It's a wonder we can see them through this dirty window.

LOL at Ray. Those pesky squirrels aren't dumb!
Mary MacADNski: What would the day be without Ray's comments! A squirrel is a rat with a tail who eats more seeds in a day than all the birds.

Great DOF and a beautiful scene, I think you can watch these little birds all day, at least I could....
Mary MacADNski: Thanks, Astrid. The cats watch them all day but I'm too busy at the other end of the house. They let me know if anything is amiss.
Lol at Ray!
Lovely capture Mary.
Mary MacADNski: Ray is quite a card. Thanks, Richard.
Lovely birds.
Mary MacADNski: Thanks, Stefania.

LOL! I wonder why the squirrel was doing this? perhaps he was trying to protect the supply of "his" nuts from those pesky birds smile
Mary MacADNski: I push them back in about five times a day. I'm going to fix it today with twist ties to make them stay. Squirrels are so greedy
Beautiful birds to look at, and funny squirrels to make you laugh. Lovely picture.
Mary MacADNski: Squirrels don't make me laugh. They make me curse and swear.
Pretty little birds Mary..and its wise to offer them food when the snow is there.
Mary MacADNski: Bird feeding is a very widespread activity in winter here. The birds are very well fed. I wonder how they survived the winters fifty years ago when people did not feed birds.
This is rather jolly Mary.
Mary MacADNski: I like jolly in my days, Chad. It's true that the birds provide some.

This 'breeding' colouration can make identification difficult out of season. And we have so many.
Nice shot.
Mary MacADNski: Yes, Of our winter birds, only the finch family have differences in m/f coloration.
Very well caught Mary, a fine little group.
Mary MacADNski: They travel in flocks of about fifty. All the bird feeders are covered and the tree is full.

I am likeing the inginewity. if only i could spell it.
Mary MacADNski: You're funny, Mark. Ingenuity. I always sound it out and use spell check.
Our goldfinches get through niger seeds like they are going out of fashion! Our goldfinches have a lot of red about the head

Mary MacADNski: What a beautiful finch. They look like a cross between an Amer. goldfinch and a redpoll, another small finch.
Females are less colorful, but are more delicate, more slender. These birds are very beautiful.
Mary MacADNski: They are very sweet. i will take some photos in the spring to show the yellow heads on the males.

Ellos son muy dulces. Voy a tomar algunas fotos en la primavera para mostrar la cabeza amarilla en los machos.
