photoblog image Four Mallards

Four Mallards

This was taken Tuesday morning from my driveway.  The ducks climb onto the ice to get further away when I walk toward them (and the car). This week I've also had a merganser in the pond but have not managed to get a photo yet.

I had to look up 'merganser' - thought it was some kind of speedboat or something smile Looking forward to its picture.
Mary MacADNski: No ducks at all so far this morning. In winter I usually get occasional visits from mergansers and golden eyes but the mallards and black ducks are regular visitors.

You wonder how these birds survive in this sort of climate Mary - but they do!
Mary MacADNski: Many mallards and black ducks overwinter on the Island but not all do. I've always wondered why some do, some don't.

Quick google and now l eagerly await your soon to be had shot of the merganser
Mary MacADNski: It is a common merganser if you saw several types. They are fish eaters so the trout will disappear again. Cormorants were visiting last fall and summer so the fish are scarce anyway.
I can just hear them saying, 'At least our water has not frozen over1.
Mary MacADNski: What ice there is is very thin and a duck fell through yesterday. There is a duck-shaped hole in the ice.
brrr.. looks cold.
Nice image with the ducks against the snow..
smile
Mary MacADNski: Thanks, Rob. It's warming and the ice will be gone again soon.
Fine capture Mary. They come out pretty well on the snow!
Mary MacADNski: They are less frightened in summer it seems.
They stand out beautifully against the snow, their poor little feet.
Mary MacADNski: They're tough. It hasn't been cold this week and is getting even warmer.
You presumably live right next to a river or lake than Mary.
Mary MacADNski: I live on a pond with fish and frogs though with cormorants and mergansers visiting frequently the last few years, It will soon be barren.
lovely shot, Mary! they look like they might be cold smile
Mary MacADNski: They're tough. We're all tough here in Eastern Canada. The weak don't survive.

Mary MacADNski: Thanks you. It is out my door.
Looking at this..I just hope we've seen the last of the snow in Wales.. Ok for the ducks but not for me!.Nice one Mary.
Mary MacADNski: This is melting quickly. We're into a warming trend.

I've had to Google for "merganser"; now I know! At least these guys have some open water so should be OK.
Mary MacADNski: Fish thief is another word. Actually cormorants are worse at that.
Lovely winter shot Mary. They could do with some of this snow in Vancouvergrin
Mary MacADNski: Yes, though its warm now. This ice is melting quickly. Warmth forecast for at least a week.
