photoblog image Merganser Americanus

Merganser Americanus

I apologize for the poor quality but this is the best of the shots I got of the merganser that was in my pond last week.  It stayed only one day. The mallards didn't mind him at all even though they are very different type ducks.

Good enough for me...my first Merganser sighting, I think, and gives me something to improve on next time.
Mary MacADNski: Did you check out the link? Also google has more information.
sometimes its just abou tthe image and not how technically good it is, nice shot Mary
Mary MacADNski: You're kind. I would never have up it up but someone asked for a photo of it. I have one in perfect focus with the merganser's head behind a cattail.
i think its great, Mary. it looks cold in the image and I imagine it really was smile
Mary MacADNski: We only had one cold week so now it's around zero or 32 in American.

Since it seems to be a taller type of duck, I believe the mallards will give it some room.
Mary MacADNski: They don't compete for food, the mallards being primarily vegetarian and the merganser a fish eater. They also don't nest in the same type places so they all have 'no worries'.

Dont apologise for the quality, l wouldn't have made it outside to take the shot
Mary MacADNski: It was through the kitchen window. If I opened the door they might have taken off.

Well done Mary - he's obviously a very different beast!
Mary MacADNski: He's a diving, fish eating duck and the mallards are dabbling, vegetarian. They don't compete for food or nesting spots.

I like it
Mary MacADNski: You are very kind.
You are lucky to have a pond so near and to enjoy the wildlife thats visit smile
Mary MacADNski: Most people want an ocean view on the Island. I would rather have my pond with it's ducks, frogs, herons, muskrat, red-wing blackbirds, dragonflies, cattails, grasses, and it's whole lot more life forms that it carries. All from my kitchen table! On a normal winter you can also skate on it.
I really like it Mary. A great atmosphere!
Mary MacADNski: The pond is always an interesting spot.

No worries, Mary. Good to see the merganser.
Mary MacADNski: It was hard through the window.
Glad that you have uploaded this picture. I did not know this duck and I think beautiful, very elegant. I've looked on google and the female is also very nice. Thanks Mary.
Mary MacADNski: Esta es la especie de América del Norte, pero hay una especie europea también. Es inusual, pero hermoso aspecto. Si se miraba para arriba es posible que ya han sabido esto y visto también.

A first for me also.
Mary MacADNski: They're beautiful but eat all your fish. I didn't have to worry because I had a few cormorants visit in the fall. They thought fishing was pretty good, stayed for a week and ate all the trout.
Well worth the effort Mary even if you are not happy with the quality. A Merganser is a new species to me.
Mary MacADNski: I had to shoot through the kitchen window. In the link I provided, it tells that there is a European species as well. This one is merganser americanus. The European species is quite beautiful.
At least..its been recorded for everyone to see. Well spotted Mary
Mary MacADNski: That's about it. Hard through the kitchen window.
I thought for a moment, blimey that bird has got long legstongue
Mary MacADNski: I will always see those 'legs' every time I look at this photo. Too funny!
