Ready, Set, Haul In

This was taken on Thursday, one day before the setting of lobster traps to begin our spring lobster season.  Today (May 1st as I write this), there will be plenty of Islanders having their first taste.  Many, like myself, will get their first taste next weekend, on Mother's Day.

l know lobsters are different to our crayfish but if they are on par for taste l am extremely jealous
Mary MacADNski: Crayfish in North America aren't salt water creatures but come from brackish fresh water in the southern states of the US. I've had plenty of those and they're not really alike. Lobster is sweet and saltier.

Lucky for me, Mary, I had lobster and steak at my daughter's house on Friday...my first lobster in I don't remember when! Now my mouth is watering again!
Mary MacADNski: Sounds wonderful! I'm waiting patiently for Sunday.

From this angle, the boats have an unexpected elegance.
Mary MacADNski: The fishing boats here are quite attractive with their low, wide set shape.

These guys are ready. So is your lobster urn cleaned and ready?

I have just been reading a book where, amongst others, they describe the french culinary feasts all year round.
Mary MacADNski: My lobster pot is indeed ready but I'm hoping it is already cooked when it arrives.
crowwdded harbour
Mary MacADNski: This is just a small part. It is really quite crowded on a wider shot.

Great photo enjoy yor lobster on mothers day
Mary MacADNski: Oh I will!
I wish I was there!
Mary MacADNski: Setting day is quite an event in some communities. The wharves will fill with people early in the morning to see the fishermen off at first light.
Looks like they're going to get a lot of lobsters! Great image on a dull day, Mary.
Mary MacADNski: Hundreds of pounds per day, they hope.
I haven't ever tasted Lobster, I bet these boys have, look at all those Lobster pots ready for use.
Mary MacADNski: Do yourself a favor and buy some for a special occasion. It is delectable.

Ah yes, you celebrate your Mother's Day to a different time to us. Looks like some lobster pots are already in the water? Or are they waiting for their load?
Mary MacADNski: We celebrate the second Sunday in May. The men in the empty boat are waiting for the rest of their crew to help with loading the boats, I'd say. Each boat fills and unloads two or three times during the setting.
A very silvery sea we have here but a little chilly I suspect.
Mary MacADNski: It wasn't too bad. I was standing on a beach an hour later but an hour after that, it was raining.
poor ol' lobsters... smile
great shot!!
Mary MacADNski: I'm not a vegetarian. Sounds like you are. sorry.
That's funny our Mother' day was march 14th in Ireland and Britain.
Mary MacADNski: Ours is second Sunday in May. Fathers Day is third Sunday in June.
So many lobster pots, Mary. It will be a great catch if they can fill them all. Was this shot taken in the Rustico area?

As for your Mother's Day feast, I am green with envy. Enjoy!!!
Mary MacADNski: I'm lucky as my son gives me lobster and my daughter's best friend give some. She works on a lobster boat. You've got to have muscles for that!

This was taken at the Montague Wharf.
They are tidy looking boats..and such a heap of pots to carry.
Mary MacADNski: They fill those boats several times before they're done.
There must be great fun and anxiety waiting to go. I bet they taste delicioussmile
Mary MacADNski: Some wharves are filled with people in a party atmosphere at five or so in the morning. The boats take off at first light.
great shot of the working boats there Mary
Mary MacADNski: This is only the beginning. They load the boats several times before they're finished on setting day.
