photoblog image Black and White Poppy

Black and White Poppy

You're probably quite shocked to see a black and white from me.  I had some free time in a friend's garden last week and she had three poppies in bloom.  I shot so many frames I thought I could afford to alter one. I must say I like the coloured ones better but this is interesting enough.

The black and white makes the poppy look like tissue paper. I like it.
Mary MacADNski: Hey Cath! It looks nice but would you like a vase full on your table? Nah, red please.

Nice conversion, great shot. I'm a big fan of poppy pictures smile
Mary MacADNski: I have one in red tomorrow.

Yup! Did a double-take when this showed up.

I like it, but I think poppies deserve their colour, Mary.
Mary MacADNski: I think the colour is best. Can you imaging a vase full of them looking like this?
I agree it is not a poppy as we know it. But you've made it look so delicate and fragile that it looks transparent.
Mary MacADNski: I don't think they would do much for a pretty landscape. LOL

Mono, l couldn't believe my eyes grin
Mary MacADNski: Thought it would surprise a few people. LOL
I like this very much Mary.
Mary MacADNski: Thanks, Bill.

This is exceedingly interesting Mary. Just look at the texture of those petals & stalk: removing the colour brings other things to the fore!
Mary MacADNski: It is interesting. It makes us use our imagination.
The result is great Mary. I like the softness here!
Mary MacADNski: Thanks, Richard.

It looks paper thin in black and white
Mary MacADNski: The sun was very strong at this time of day and made a great transparency.

I'm with you, mary. Colour is my preferred choice generally. The poppy does look like tissue paper as others have noticed.
Mary MacADNski: I think I will play with it a bit more after some later suggestions. I hardly ever go play.
I think that's the first time I've ever seen a poppy in monochrome! Makes it look VERY fragile!
Mary MacADNski: I had so many shots of different comps that I had some spares to play with.

I don't think this works, Ms. MM. You picked the wrong subject to play with b&w, but I'm glad you try new things. It's about time, don't you think? smile Why don't you get yourself a decent software, like, say, Elements? No photographer should be without a darkroom, and that is exactly what the PP software is. The Elements is not expensive and it might allow you more freedom in what you try achieve. Remember, the camera lens is just a piece of glass, not a match for our eyes.
Mary MacADNski: I truly don't have the time to play with photos though I'd like to. If I can find some spare time hiding under a table or behind a curtain, I will devote some to my photos. I am painting any spare moment now and at the moment that is where my self direction is taking me.
Knowing you don't generally "twiddle" Mary I am enjoying this wonderful conversion even more, it is stunning as fas as I am concerned.
Mary MacADNski: Thanks for that.
It's fun to experiment once in a while, Mary, and you never know, you just might end up with something really wonderful.
Mary MacADNski: I might play with it again sometime.
Interesting high jinks Mary ... but it looks far too flat and lifeless for my taste. Maybe give it more intense tones and sharper ... but who knows

;-)richard
Mary MacADNski: I just converted it to B/W but didn't go as far enough as changing any levels. Maybe if I ever find a spare minute (lol) I will do that.
The result is interresting indeed ! I like
I do like it Mary, it looks more fragile, but I think I would prefer the colour version best. smile
I love the transparency of this one and the fragility of this flower. A+ VAL smile
