Shags are comical, unlikely-looking birds...sort of flying penguins.
Mary MacADNski: I think they are beautiful in their own way. I must say though that I do not like when they spend a week in winter vacationing in my pond, dining on trout.

Mary MacADNski: Mr(s0 Wingtip
Good timing on the wings here.

Sorry I have been absent for a while. Home situation makes me focus on health. I hope to be able to come by a bit more often from now on.
Mary MacADNski: Thanks, Chantal. I've been here and looking at photos but not commenting. Hope you are OK.

A splendid pose and a nice angle Mary
Mary MacADNski: Taken from a bridge where there were 20 signs saying no stopping. There are tons of pylons and cormorants and I would imagine that many others want to stop for photos too.
The common cormorant or shag
Lays eggs inside a paper bag
The reason you will see no doubt
It is to keep the lightning out
But what these unobservant birds
Have never noticed is that herds
Of wandering bears may come with buns
And steal the bags to hold the crumbs.
Mary MacADNski: That is a cute little poem and would have been great to accompany the image.
Oh very well done. Lovely shot. Not sure that I like that old post on the left, but I can't make up my mind about that.
Mary MacADNski: I have no time to even crop something out these days, Sheila. I'm lucky to find a moment to post.
I always think these birds look lonely. Nice image. (:o)
Mary MacADNski: Here, they are always in colonies. There were a couple hundred here. I isolated one for the shot.

There the same world wide smile
Mary MacADNski: Yes, they are everywhere, stealing fish. LOL
Fascinating birds they are! I always consider them a bit clumsy, looking at the hocus-pocus they do with the wings. Nice shot here
Mary MacADNski: Thanks, Marion. These birds are considered pests but they have their beauty.

It looks like it's about to swan dive into the water. Nice capture.
Mary MacADNski: They lack oil in their feathers and must do this to dry their wings.
Nice one, Mary - such a typical pose.
Mary MacADNski: This is only one in a large colony. I got some other shots as well.

He probably saw you coming, Mary, and wanted to put on a little wing display for the camera. BTW, I like the weathered looking post on the left, just hope the bridge is in better condition.
Mary MacADNski: It is the bridge in Abercrombie, NS nearing the PEI ferry. It's busy and there are signs every 5 feet saying "no stopping on bridge.' There has been a cormorant colony on old pilings there forever and I would imagine everyone wants to stop for a look.
Excellent shot of one of these interesting birds Mary.
Mary MacADNski: Thanks, Brian.
You caught him in mid flap Mary
Mary MacADNski: Cormorants sit like this for ages and dry their wings this way
I've always loved these guys. We see themfishing in the bay and in the harbour. I have a not great quality pic of one just surfacing with an eel wrapped around it's beak. I was gobsmacked to find out their feathers are not waterproof, which is why they have to dry them like that.
Mary MacADNski: I like them in summer when they are not in my pond. They usually have winter vacations here and fish out all the trout.
Très belle photo!
Superbes couleurs!

Mary MacADNski: Thanks, Claire.
