A fine study of Kenz, Mary.

I am getting to know a bit about cat health...

I sure hope the medication is harmless and effective.
Mary MacADNski: THyroid conditions are common in geriatric cats apparently. It is common in hymans too. Meds will be effective. Thankfully it is Kenz who I will have to give a pill to, not Bella.
She looks like a hunter.
Mary MacADNski: Not at all. She has been trained not to hunt. When they go from the driveway to the house like this they kind of duck down in fear of swallows swooping over them.
I hope she will be OK Mary.
Mary MacADNski: I think so. He says it is common in geriatric cats. She was 12 on Sunday.

Mary MacADNski: She just had a roll in the dust and is coming back to the house.
Her medication will fix her problem, she still looks good smile
Mary MacADNski: She has lost a lot of weight. She's only 7 and a half pounds. Those saggy tabby bellies make her look bigger. I am confident in the medication too.
I'll pray for Kenz's full recovery.
Mary MacADNski: I'm sure she will be fine after getting medication.
Sorry about Kenz's condition. I never realized how old she is - she looks good in the photos you post.

I used to have a cat, similar to Kenz and Bella, who loved cooked potato and chocolate. I could get her to take anything as long as it was hidden in or wrapped in either potato or chocolate. She also liked cheese.
Mary MacADNski: I can't believe they are that old either! Hyperthyroidism is very treatable and she is easy to give a pill to.

These girls will not eat anything but hard kibble and the juice from canned tuna or salmon. I've bought kitty treats of every brand and they will not eat them. Bella will eat a couple of pieces of popcorn. I've never had such finicky cats.
How did you train her not to hunt, Mary? I've never managed that with a cat!
Mary MacADNski: From day one, I talked of the birds like I talked of them, using the same words - pretty birdies and pretty kitties. I fed the birds their supper, fed the kitties their supper. I held chickadees in my hand with the cats sitting there. If there was ever a hunting look or crouch, I said to be nice to the pretty birdies. They knew what being nice was from other examples. For the first year, every time they went outside I always said to be nice to the pretty birdies. I was persistent in all these methods and it worked. Birds land on the deck railing while the cats sit on it. The birds who hang out at my feeders have been coming for years and know the cats will not hurt them.

I think that because they were orphans, found without a mother before their eyes were open, my training allowing me to know that this was possible, and being very consistent and persistent, it was possible to achieve this.

She's a cat on a mission, Mary. Sorry to hear about Kenz. It's a common condition, though, and easily treated with daily medication. My friend's cat lived until she was nearly 20.
Mary MacADNski: I'm not worried about the thyroid condition as it is easy to give her a pill. Glad it's not her feisty sister I have to treat.
