photoblog image On the Rocks

On the Rocks

This pile of rocks and the rusty wharf that I showed yesterday are a cormorant colony.  It is the look of these birds that fascinate me and the fact that they gather in colonies. I have more photos of cormorants in my files than any other bird.

They are wonderful birds, Mary, and well worth making a subject to study through your lens.
Mary MacADNski: I need a longer lens for this bunch. From tomorrow's shot you will see the limit of my lens.

Nice shot Mary....the cormorants are very beautiful in flight.....we have some on our lake and they have their special rocks to colonize here as well.....they all take off when i pass near but i seldom have my camera when i am fishing....
Check this out Mary http://petermeilleur.shutterchance.com/photoblog/Windswept_White_Pines_at_Sunset_/ ....Beverly said that it was inspiration for a painting and i told her that i would ask you to paint it for me......please....peter
Mary MacADNski: Gosh, if I had the time, Peter, I would do it. My work schedule is still clogged till at least the first of Sept. when my work partner gets her cast off. As it is, I have six unfinished paintings sitting behind me.
What a sight, Mary! It is no wonder they inspire you. I like the band of seawead in this shot, too. (:o)
Mary MacADNski: That is actually rock with a lot of barnacle like growth on it. Not the best for bare feet.

This is a worldwide phenomenon Mary - we have this sort of thing here too. Safety in numbers??
Mary MacADNski: Yes, they're everywhere. I've always been a bit fascinated with them - except when they vacation on my pond in winter and eat all the trout.

Mary MacADNski: Yes, they can be pests but I think they are beautiful.

Mary MacADNski: Chatting up a storm by the sound of it.

What a great shot Mary. I can't believe the place where you live!
Mary MacADNski: It is wonderful here, I must admit.
Very nice.
Cormorants are interesting birds for sure.
Mary MacADNski: They're kind of ugly/beautiful.
Wow!!! I would love to see this IRL!! I saw three together on a rock in Lough Corrib yesterday, and thought I was lucky, but a whole colony like this, amazing!!! Well seen and nicely captured, Mary.
Mary MacADNski: We have lots of colonies here.

Wow I don't think I have seen that many ever
Mary MacADNski: The wharf to the right, out of the shot, is full too.

I wonder if there is a pecking order?
Mary MacADNski: I I would think so. Now that the next shot is up, I think you see it in action. LOL
I am not surprised you take a lot of pictures of these splendid birds
Mary MacADNski: There are lots of colonies.
A great view Mary...A long lens would be useful there.
Mary MacADNski: As you know by today's shot, I don't have too large a lens.
Sometimes our bird island looks like this too. But sometime it seems almost empty. I regard this as committe meeting time!
Mary MacADNski: When it's empty they are off fishing. Now they're telling fish stories.
Quite a gathering, lovely sight to see smile
Mary MacADNski: They are noisy but beautiful.
So strange to see those large white boulders when thinking of P.E.I. I guess there are areas there where red rocks do not dominate.

Looks as if this particular cormorant colony is quite prolific as it spreads the full length of the island. Well spotted & shot, Mary.
Mary MacADNski: The whit is bird poop, Beverly. Those were red rocks.
Yup, they are pretty gregarious birds!
Mary MacADNski: Yes, and we have lots of them.

In flight they always look unlikely candidates to stay airborne.
This lot on the rocks seem to think they are safe from Canadians smile
Mary MacADNski: We have a lot of cormorants here. We need protection from them.
you find so many birds do the same, must be a feeling of safety with them ,good shot
Mary MacADNski: Yes, there's safety in numbers.
What a great place for this colony, surely the target for plenty of photos Mary.
Mary MacADNski: I would think this is a very photographed rock, for sure.
