photoblog image Red-Wing Black Bird

Red-Wing Black Bird

A red-wing black bird the morning of the frozen sleet a week or so ago. I know spring has arrived when the males arrive to secure just the right bullrush stalks to nest within .  The females come a week or so later.  They are happily laying eggs and nesting these days.

Spring flowers are rating high on An Island Walk.

It is a fine looking bird, Mary.
Mary MacADNski: A plain blackbird but for the red decoration on the outer wing.

Well captured Mary
Mary MacADNski: Thanks, Chris. They don't stay still for long. They try to keep your attention away from the Missus and her brood.
love the red breast
Mary MacADNski: The red is just a patch on the outer-side of the wing. It is a blackbird otherwise.

What a lovely bright 'bib' this bird has Mary.

A very distinctive looking bird Mary.
Mary MacADNski: The red patch on the wing is very striking.
This isn't a species I recall seeing over here, the red breast is lovely.
Mary MacADNski: This is the red winged blackbird. They nest in dead reeds and rushes. The red is only on the back of it's wing

The early bird catches the worm or in this case the stalk smile
Mary MacADNski: He's keeping my attention away from his beloved and her nest. That's his job.
Love the minimalist feel of this one, Mary.
Mary MacADNski: They certainly don't flock when on the water this way though they do in trees.
Great image, Mary.
Mary MacADNski: Thanks, Tom.
This is an amazing photo. Great composition!
Mary MacADNski: Thanks, Larry. I may paint this sometime.
A welcome sight but still looking pretty cold there
Mary MacADNski: That was a freak snowstorm in April. It is cold and rainy though so far this spring.
Great capture Mary of both the red-wing black bird and the ice crystals....sorry about your sleet a week ago....our lake is still closed over but melting a bit each day....Buddy went for a swim and a drink today at a boat ramp that has a bit of open water...i wish that i had my camera with mesad....petersmile
Mary MacADNski: I hate it when that happens.
Clearly trying to attract attention to himself
Mary MacADNski: That is exactly wht he is doing. His lady is sitting on her nest and he wants to keep you away from her.
well spotted......
Mary MacADNski: No, he's striped. LOL
