photoblog image Duck in Lavender

Duck in Lavender

This duck made her nest in the Italian lavender of the garden center of a supermarket.  After the ducklings hatched she started across the parking lot at 2 am.  A taxi driver saw her and stopped traffic so she could cross the street and enter a nearby pond.

I had to do a double take when I looked at this, Mary. How wonderful that they let her keep the nest in the Italian lavender until her ducklings were hatched. I love to hear stories like that.
Mary MacADNski: Everyone worried about what would happen after the ducklings hatched but it all worked out in the end.

Superb.

Good on the taxi driver, too.
Mary MacADNski: Everything worked in this case, this time.
A fine picture and a touching story...
Mary MacADNski: She was a lucky duck.
What a lovely story! and the photo of your mama duck is really lovely with her keeping a sharp eye on you!
Mary MacADNski: She knew I meant no harm. I talked to her the whole time. I raised ducks for many years and LOVE them.
I love your story about the duck Mary and your capture of her in the Lavender is fantastic....petersmile
Mary MacADNski: Super Store ads say, "Worth changing supermarkets for".

What a sweet story to go with this charming image, Mary. You'd never know this was anywhere other than in the wild!
Mary MacADNski: That's true. Mama was smart. She is much safer here than in the wild. I wonder if she will come back next year.

This is delightful. As Ginnie says, this could be anywhere in the wild.

Good on the taxi driver, too. I can recall a Youtube video last year maybe where a duck gave birth to her brood on a shop canopy and when they all came to leave, the little ones just jumped off but each was caught by someone and then gently lowered to the ground before they all waddled off!
Mary MacADNski: I love your story, Alan. Ducks are resourceful and actually quite trusting of people.

I like this Mary. I think that all supermarkets should be surrounded by Italian lavender.
Mary MacADNski: I once went to a building in AU housing many artists and crafts people. From the parking lot to the building, they had narrow paths through acres of lavender. It remains one of my favorite memories of Australia.
smelling all lavendary!
Mary MacADNski: I can't imagine a better choice for a nest.
Fine capture, I love ducks, bit they do seem to make strange nesting choices.
Mary MacADNski: When I raised ducks one had been missing for most of the day. She would appear once in a while to eat and drink. I knew she was nesting somewhere but couldn't figure out where. I followed her one day and found she had made her nest behind a piece of plywood leaning against a tree. To protect her from foxes and raccoons I moved the nest into a stall in a duck house but she was not pleased. She abandoned the nest.

Our taxi drivers are a bit different. They will run the whole bunch over and take them home for dinner. you ask your saffie if I lie tongue

Meantime it is a great shot reminding what things could be like.
Mary MacADNski: I believe you, sad as that is.
nice low down angle. you must have been right about the same angle as the duck. excellent capture and kudos to the good Samaritan taxi driver
Mary MacADNski: I wanted to get my nose as close to the lavender as possible. LOL
She picked a pretty spot!
Mary MacADNski: She did. The staff were very protective and had closed off the area.

Don't let us forget the smell of Lavender! (Even one pot of Lavender on my balcony can elicit the feeling to be in France or Italy as holidayer!)
Mary MacADNski: It is one of my favorite smells. A friend gave me a big bouquet a few days ago and I am still swooning with the wonderful smells. Lavender always reminds me of Australia where there were many fields and gardens to enjoy.
Awwwwwww
Mary MacADNski: A wonderful find for me, the duck lover that I am.
That really is a great, and humorous, picture Mary.
Mary MacADNski: Thanks, Brian.
Is it the same the world over, that ducks stop traffic ! Lovely picture and story Mary
Mary MacADNski: That's very true, Bill. We have all seen photos and heard stories. Ducks are so determined to get their babies to the water.
Love this Mary... and the story.
Mary MacADNski: Someone showed me their photo in today's newspaper. They have had a lot of coverage.
