photoblog image Big Grey Boy

Big Grey Boy

One of the world's most famous feral cat colonies

is that living in the ruins of the Roman Colosseum, made up of about 250 cats.

Rome may have been spared the Plague, thanks to these cats.

Big Grey Boy is a fellow in Eekie's family.  He rubs my hand when I feed him and likes to be petted but only so much. He is huge, and solid and his fur is rough.

It is amazing how many homeless cats are adopted by families of animal loving people.

There is a third member of this family, a huge big orange cat that we really don't know the sex of because it's tail is firmly wrapped under it while running the other way whenever approached.  We call that one Big Orange Kitty.  I doubt I could ever get a shot of it.  They are well fed and sheltered.  Strays are helped out by numerous rural citizens and some societies, after they've been dropped off in the countryside by uneducated people.

He's a fine-looking moggie, Mary...seems to have an alpha-male look about him, but probably melts like a chocolate frog in the sun when the alpha female is in the vicinity.
Mary MacADNski: He is banned from the inside of the house as he has sprayed his obnoxious odours around when he has come in.
he looks a little grumpy

He looks to have a wonderfully thick winter coat
One tough looking Guy, well insulated from the weather.
Makes me mad when people dump cats. There are a lot of rescue centres here and many cats are re-homed. Our last two cats were rescue cats and our current two were from someone who was moving to America and couldn't take them
Nice, Mary,he looks a good old boy. smile
That is a gigantic cat--very handsome!

There is a special place in heaven for people who adopt strays...
I am impressed by the size of Big Grey Boy Mary!
The famous (infamous?) feral cat colony is centered just up the road from The Colosseum, in Trajan's Forum. I recall lunching in a restaurant overlooking the area and watching them prowling around. Big Grey Boy looks as if he could hold his own against the best of them!
