Trusting Heron

14 June 2011

This first week of looking back at 2011 will feature birds in my pond. I remember this young heron as he was not afraid, as herons usually are. The bit of red appears to be a coloured leaf of the weed growing in the grass.

This is a beautiful photo, Mary!
Mary MacADNski: I got quite a few that day, luckily.
Well, there's a coincidence! How different, though!
Mary MacADNski: We always have herons but they take off or move to the other side of the pond when we are on their side. This one didn't and I got quite a few shots.
Superb capture of one of my favourite birds Mary!
Mary MacADNski: I write on my calendar every year the first one on the pond.

He is taking it all in his stride
Mary MacADNski: So unusual for a young heron. We had a huge old granddaddy who returned every year. He was not afraid but that had been the only one like that.
A delightful image of life in the wild Mary.
Mary MacADNski: It is a nice place to live, in the wild.

A fine upstanding bird, Mary
Mary MacADNski: I got several shots. It was unusual for it to stay and not fly away.

This is a wonderful picture. The hunter being spotted. Herons are very jumpy and very hard to capture. You did a great job.

You are so lucky it was still enough for this lovely image, Mary. They really are usually quite skittish.

Nice shot of a magnificent bird Mary
Mary MacADNski: Thanks, Bill. It was very cooperative.

This is a very fine image!
Mary MacADNski: Thanks, Philine. This was a cooperative heron.
Graeme Hubbard has a Heron on watch in his posting today, totally different to this one. How lucky to get them in your garden, as long as they don't eat any fish you may have!
Mary MacADNski: They are welcome to the fish. No one fishes here anymore as my son got into fly fishing.

They have great patience; able to stand still and watch whilst waiting for something to swim into grabbing distance.
Mary MacADNski: Several have breakfast here. I have a shot of five in the trees around the pond at just past daylight.

What a great shot, did he leave you with many fish in your pond?
Mary MacADNski: They are welcome to the fish. There were three people who seriously fished here. None do anymore for various reasons so the herons can keep it fished.

Heh, the frogs should be afraid. Great pond.
Mary MacADNski: There are lots of frogs and yes, the herons do get frogs as well as fish.
They usually are quite sh
Mary MacADNski: I know! I have always had herons here and have never seen a young one this tolerant of my nearness.
Stunning shot, Mary!
Mary MacADNski: Thanks, Tom. I took a whole bunch and might make a gif.

A fine boid, Mary.
Mary MacADNski: Herons are and I have been happy to have them hang out here for the last 32 years.
