Purrl Problems

Please excuse the poor shot of Purrl in her favorite sleeping position.  Stories of Alma have filled the blog all winter while another major event with a cat was happening.  Purrl has become allergic to commercial cat food. She has had itchy ears since the fall.  I treated both cats for fleas though I had not seen any sign of them.  Also her hair had patches of brown and was falling out.

Though very common in dogs, the vet said food allergy is uncommon in cats.  For three months I must feed her a novel protein such as kangaroo, bison, goose, lamb etc, food's that are not commonly found in a pet foods. I have chosen duck and she has been on it for over a month. She also had a round of steroids.

She is doing great with no more itchy ears or falling hair.  The travails of feeding one cat a different food has been interesting and a story for another day.

When Alma is gone I will feed both my cats the duck food but it is too expensive to feed to three cats.

I took my son to the airport this morning for the last time this winter. He is off to France, Holland, and Brussels for 11 days then home!

We had to feed a cat a special 'low residue' diet of fresh fish and rice - he enjoyed it immensely and thrived. It certainly can be an expensive business - having Sassy seen to recently has cost us about £500 in vet's fees.
Mary MacADNski: Purrl is doing well too on her new diet. It is called Sensitivity & Shine and she is definitely getting shinier. The food is $29.00 for a 4 pound bag. Hope Sassy is ok.

AAaahhh.. poor old Purrl. Naturally the only food that she can tolerate is more expensive then the ordinary food. Good job the vet was able to spot the cause.
Mary MacADNski: She knew right away and the food store lady asked if she had ear infections and falling hair. Something immediately identifiable as it is uncommon.
I'm so sorry about Purrl. I hope the new food will keep her on the mend. I've recently developed a food allergy myself, my lips swelled up and I have spent the past week looking like Anjelina Jolie with a bad collagen job! smile
Mary MacADNski: That happened to my niece years ago and they never figured out what hit her. It was very scary and never reoccurred. She had some crazy lips though.
