photoblog image Missus Mona Mallard

Missus Mona Mallard

This especially pretty mallard duck lost her nest to marauding foxes or raccoons a week or so ago. She has since begun a nest somewhere just across my lawn to under some trees bordering the property.  Every morning I have seen the Mister and Missus walking across the lawn to the pond after she has laid her egg. I did not see her today (Sunday) so she may have decided to sit already.

This week is devoted to the fowl.

If I was Mr Mallard then I would be proud to be seen out waddling with this lovely gal...
Mary MacADNski: She is lovely and quite striking too.

Elle est mignonne. Il y a un canard chez moi aussi aujourd'hui.
Mary MacADNski: Yes, you have a baby mallard. We were of like minds.

She is aware of what you are doing
Mary MacADNski: She and the mister were aware of me and unafraid each day I was out with them.
She is well turned out in that custom coat, such fine markings.
Mary MacADNski: She has extra wide stripes, a bit unusual but certainly pretty,
What a bad fox.
Mary MacADNski: I have seen two different foxes here lately. Coyotes, dogs, mink and raccoons also get duck nests.

Such predation must be very common. Let's hope that Mister and Misses are soon proud parents.
Mary MacADNski: It is very common but the last two years before this were event free and we had early ducklings. It changes from year to year.

Mary MacADNski: Last year and the year before we had early ducklings. Three years ago the missus lost her nest three times and we had very late ducklings. I remember reporting on it here.

There is lots of time yet.
A fine looking lady isn't she.
Mary MacADNski: She really is with a wider stripe than usual.
Let's hope she is successful this time Mary. This is a fine picture of her
Mary MacADNski: The last two years were very successful for her.

I love the markings of this duck, she can be proud of her beauty.
Mary MacADNski: She has wider stripes and is very attractive.
she will build another nests soon enough Mary... this is a great portrait of Mona Mallard....petersmile
Mary MacADNski: I have not seen her. It is all drakes in the pond so I am sure she is sitting.
Poor Missus... I hope their next efforts will be productive. Nice shot, Mary!
Mary MacADNski: I know it is hard with all the prey but I HOPE FOR THE BEST TOO.
