Future Potatoes

David Wilkins from Ireland who was here on SC for a few years grows potatoes in pots.  I thought I would try it this year and have two pots of potatoes on the deck. I think the flowers quite pretty.

Nearly the same as egg-plant blooms, Mary...lots of attractive veggie blooms.
Mary MacADNski: They are from the same family as a matter of fact.

I hadn't noticed how pretty the flowers really are, Mary. My pots are ready for digging
Mary MacADNski: I got white ones and purple ones so far but no creamy yellow. The fields are gorgeous right now.

A splendid image. I love potatoes
Mary MacADNski: Many people do. I can take them or leave when by themselves but when included in a food like stew, fishcakes, potato salad, I like them a lot.
I didn't know they had flowers like this, Mary...just eyes. LOTS of eyes. HA! And the potato song is a riot!
Mary MacADNski: The fields of potatoes flowering right now are a sight to behold, especially the purple/mauve type.
I am sure that you will enjoy your potatoes that much more having nurtured them in pots Mary.
Mary MacADNski: I don't bother with them in the garden because they are readily available and space in my garden is premium.

You focused on the beauty of the beauty of the potato plant. I always thought they make a beautiful display when in full flower.

I used to help my father-in-law in the Netherlands to harvest the potatoes - him being a bit old fashioned about the quality of what he takes to the market, required manual harvesting. To have a spread like this in front of you, killed all enthusiasm, yet we did it.
Mary MacADNski: When I grew up they were harvested by hand as well. I lived nowhere potato country but my cousins did and got time off school to work.
Yes Potatoes do have lovely flowers, just like the ones here.
Mary MacADNski: They come in cream coloured and various purple shades too.

I never seen knowingly seen potato plants in bloom before; they are very pretty. It is very unusual for me not to have potato as part of my evening meal.
Mary MacADNski: They are a basic element in many diets. Here at the moment are new potatoes, which are not meant to be kept but eaten fresh. Soon a herbicide will be added and the potatoes then are not new potatoes.
I hope you get a fine crop Mary
Mary MacADNski: I have thought about it since David mentioned it. He grew carrots in pots too I believe.
The flowers are quite pretty, aren't they? And nothing tastes better than a potato straight out of the earth!
Mary MacADNski: How true that is. I had some last night like that.
Darn... now I want a potato... smile
Mary MacADNski: Ha ha. Grow some in a pot.
