photoblog image Yellow Day

Yellow Day

Mustard is a common autumn crop that is turned under and considered a green manure crop that also deters wire worms. It  certainly brightened up the November landscape a great deal.

It is a beautiful agri-scape, Mary.
Mary MacADNski: Unusual for November.

This certainly brightens things up
Mary MacADNski: It is strange to see in Nov but good too.
We see this in Europe but as rapeseed, Mary. Either way, it makes magic for the eyes, for sure.
Mary MacADNski: We have rapeseed or Canola in NA in the summer but this is mustard in the autumn.

What a delightful pictures, Mary. Little did I know that mustard is that yellow and an Autumn thing.
Mary MacADNski: Mustard is yellow but new in fall as a green manure crop. I hope it got plowed under before our crazy freeze-up/winter occurred.

How wonderful to have a crop this colour in November, Mary. I thought you had taken this in the spring
Mary MacADNski: I know! So unusual. They also plant a white flowered tupe of radish for the same reason. They deter wire worms.
You don't grow it for making mustard then?
Mary MacADNski: In the summer crops you do. You harvest mustard seeds. This is being used as a method of deterring a pest and producing green manure.

First I thought of rape fields - wonderful view, an autumn posting full of colour!
Mary MacADNski: The mustard does look similar to canola or rape as it is called in Europe. It is unusual to see it in autumn.
Hi Mary!
This for us would be spring colors, when the rapeseed blooms!
Mary MacADNski: This is mustard. It is planted late in the season and will be plowed under to provide pest control and nutrients.
November is usually a drab & dreary month, Mary, but certainly not in these colourful images.
Mary MacADNski: Hard to believe seeing a mustard crop at this time of year.
they are charming shots, Mary.
Mary MacADNski: Unusual to say the least. It is a new idea.
Glorious!
Mary MacADNski: It was certainly glorious to come across this sight.
I like the pictures very much, the Mustard crop looks very much like the Oil Seed Rape grown here in the late spring.
Mary MacADNski: Very similar looking.

It gives a fairly similar to our oil seed rape crop we get in the late spring. I'm surprised to this so late in in the year.
Mary MacADNski: It is unusual but used as a green manure/ natural insect deterrent.

They do brighten the landscape - and are useful.
Mary MacADNski: I was surprised and very pleased to see them.
Just gorgeous - the top photo is a winner for sure!
Mary MacADNski: I like that one and the second, which proves it truly is autumn.
