photoblog image Gulls in a Potato Field.

Gulls in a Potato Field.

A ready to be harvested potato field is common to see and kind of ugly so I rarely take shots of them. In this shot I was taking shots of the gulls and the field happened to be there. Potato fields look nicer at this stage for sure.

But the gulls had to land somewhere for you to capture this shot Mary... good imagination smile....petersmile
Mary MacADNski: Fields are filled with gulls, geese, crows and terns. We are on the flyway south.

There is a kind of gull logic to this:

Fish and Chips are companions...

Potatoes are Chips in the raw...

Perhaps there are unprocessed Fish Fillets here also...

[I don't regard this field as ugly, Mary]
Mary MacADNski: It is prettier at most other stages. I just think of the chemical sprays that were used to kill the green plant.
I do love the gulls - they look very pretty dotting this countryside!
Mary MacADNski: Lots of birds in the fields these days of harvest.

Ray does have a point...fish-n-chips and all. I bet those gulls aren't dumb!
Mary MacADNski: I don't get the fish part,.

Mary MacADNski: Absolutely and opportunistic. They fill the agricultural fields here.

You are quite right Mary: the potato fields are not so pretty at this stage of their lives
Mary MacADNski: No, they have better moments.
Gulls and potatoes, a rare combination indeed Mary. Some chef will obtain an idea grin
Mary MacADNski: The next field might have crows, the next terns, the next geese. Lots of ideas.
All the good stuff is under the ground!
Mary MacADNski: Potatoes for the people and worms for the gulls.
looking for food?
Mary MacADNski: Yes, lots of worms available.
They are obviously onto something good
Mary MacADNski: They like the worms under the soil.
It still makes an interesting image Mary.
Mary MacADNski: Yes, a little different as it isn't really pretty.
Lots of gull activity in this potato field, Mary. Looks as if there are few plants in the foreground that weren't harvested, or perhaps they are just weeds.
Mary MacADNski: The green plants are weeds. The potatoes are still there under the ground and have not been harvested yet, most likely due to wet conditions in the field.

Now I always assumed that potatoes are harvested when still in leaf but apparently not! I prefer my potatoes with a little meat - beef, lamb, pork etc ... not gull, though smile
Mary MacADNski: No, the plants must be top-killed to urge the plant to make a thicker skin to be able to be stored.
What a change! I do remember your previous shot, Mary. I like the gulls in this smile
Mary MacADNski: I have had lots of potato fields over the years here.

They kill the leaves off with chemicals, in preparation for mechanical harvesting. My father-in-law farmed with potatoes and refused to use that stuff. He preferred removing the potatoes by manual labour. He always got about 10% better price at the market. Since he had to use more labour he didn't make more money - it was just his pride.
Mary MacADNski: Good for him! Modern potato production does use lots of chemicals.
Gulls are beautiful ornaments for this field Mary. Fine capture.
Mary MacADNski: They are really nice anywhere to my eyes.,

a familiar look - but on our harvested fields are the birds black, crows - I like this motive!
Mary MacADNski: Lots of crows in the fields too.
Nice depth and patterns to this Mary.
Mary MacADNski: Thanks, Fred. Not pretty but it's life, eh.
