nice colours in the vegies.it looks cold.nice shot
Mary MacADNski: It took me a long time to get a photo of just the veggies. People kept walking by but that turned into a photo too.
Nice!
Really like the new-world sneakers that go so well with the old-world costume. Looks more like felt-pen than home-fired charcoal on the price signs too. Colourful capsicums work well with the black costumes. Like this one, Mary.
Mary MacADNski: They used the truck in the background to come to market too and have changed to make advances like that. Some even use gas-powered tractors but most in this huge Mennonite community still use horses for their transportation and field work.
Are these Amish women, Mary? We see them in Pennsylvania and even in Michigan sometimes.
Mary MacADNski: These are Mennonite women, Ginnie. My son lives in a largely Mennonite area. When he first moved to the area he stayed in a hotel for a week or so next door tho this huge market and on the first Saturday chaos struck on the roads and he followed the crowds. It is an adventure! Bus loads of people come from across the province to this market and it is an absolute delight.
What are the costumes for?
Great picture proving that you can even find banana's on PEI.
Mary MacADNski: This is the usual dress of the Mennonite woman. My son lives in a mostly Mennonite area and this largest market in Ontario, in central Canada, is a Mennonite market. It is huge!
Interesting picture Mary. I was wondering too if these were Amish women. The lady in the big coat looks a bit worried
Mary MacADNski: These are Mennonite women. The woman may be worried about the competition in this huge market, the largest in Ontario. Also, it was quite cold.
Very strange atmosphere here Mary. The lady on the right seems quite worried! Nice capture.
Mary MacADNski: Maybe she's worried about the competition. This is the largest market in Ontario and there are many more pepper sellers than her.
This will be Old Menonites than, I am a Mennonite myself and I have been living in Pennsylvania among Mennonites, where I found out that there are several groups within the community, normally the clothing shows in which community they live.
And yes in this modern time people will 'judge' them but I think they are doing nothing wrong, we all are different, but if we only treat each other with respect and respect the difference in living our lifes. BTW this is a great picture of the market, I am surprised they let you take the picture, Amish (the real in Pennsylvania are known to NOT alowe taken pictures of them, it is in the bible, #2 You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
Mary MacADNski: My son has lived in and around this community for years. There seems to be no problems with acceptance or lack of respect. My son very much likes the community. There were lots of people taking photos and no one seemed to mind. I waited a while to get one of just the peppers which is what I was after.
I love that the food is grown with old methods, also there are smoke houses that smoke the meat and fish naturally, not chemically. As I said, busses come from all over the province to this market. The food is incredible.
Love that pleated bonnet Mary. Unusual scene, would love to see this.
I will have to give up SC as my list of places to visit just gets longer and longer.
Mary MacADNski: You sure would love this market!!!
A shot ful lof interest. Just been enjoying your replies to other viewers; my knowledged has now increased! Good to see the old traditions kept alive, albeit with some help from the Nike/Reebok shoe supplies! Also of interest, is the lady in the hooded coat yet someone just behind with bare arms!
Mary MacADNski: When my youngest son was little we went to the movie, Ernest Scared Stupid. He was terrified of the monsters. i kept telling him that they weren't real monsters but actors and everyday people dressed up in costumes and masks. I was having a hard time convincing him until he saw that one of the monsters had Nike sneakers on. he realized then that I was right and there were real people under monster costumes.
Ok: I've got my woolies on - let's go!
Mary MacADNski: It was a woolies kind of day.
None of the look like they are really enjoying themselves. Interesting capture, though!
Mary MacADNski: It was chilly.
How interesting. Is the lady serving also Mennonite, with the blue head piece / hood? It must be so strange to try and maintain a strict code of living in todays hedonistic world.
Mary MacADNski: They're all Mennonite. They have adapted but still carry old ways. They use their horses and buggies to go to church. At this market there are huge parking lots for cars and parking lots for horses and buggies.
Nice candid street shot Mary !
Mary MacADNski: Thanks, Zebigleb.
