photoblog image Pumpkin Flower

Pumpkin Flower

With all the sunny weather and no moisture pumpkins don't know what to do.  They love the sun and are flowering profusely.  I'm getting lots of babies but when some pumpkins are about the size of an egg they are shriveling and dying, letting the more established ones get any available moisture.

a wonderful close up with the details visible just right.
Mary MacADNski: Thank you. I suffered for this. Pumpkin leaves are prickly.
This is a beautiful image - I love it! We've had the same problem with our Zucchini.
Mary MacADNski: I thought it is drought problem but Bill on wet England says he is having the same problem

It's a lovely image, Mary, but without the rain, it reminds me of "All show but no go." So sad. sad
Mary MacADNski: Yes, lots of pollination and pumpkins but they aren't growing much if at all.

I have never seen oneso up close & personal as this before!
Mary MacADNski: The leaves and stems are fill of prickles. It is not a pleasant place to be. I suffer so for my art!

That's just gorgeous!

If I was a bee I'd be spraining my neck from trying to fly into the monitor, Mary.
Mary MacADNski: They are plentiful in my garden.
what a splendid crop
Mary MacADNski: This is not cropped at all. I just got close in there with the macro feature in my camera turned on.

Great detail, a lovely macro image. What a shame the weather is causing such disruption to their life cycle
Mary MacADNski: Yes, everything is a bit stunted. We had a small amount of rain over the weekend . It is too late for many things but pumpkins should get a great boost.
This is a beautiful!
Mary MacADNski: Thank you very much. In October we will see the pumpkins.
A pumpkin flower never looked so good, Mary. You can even see the little hairs.
Mary MacADNski: The stiff prickly hairs on the leaves and stems were out and about too. Not as nice as these.
Superb close up Mary, love the colour and detail!
Mary MacADNski: Thanks, Martin. It will be a pumpkin some day, I hope.
Sumptuous feel to this nice image.
Mary MacADNski: The orangey gold is very rich, eh?
Could be some small lanterns for Halloween then?
Mary MacADNski: They will be small this year I think and if we get rain we should be ok.
More or less the same with my courgettes - but for a different reason - too much rain!
Mary MacADNski: Odd, isn't it. I found a few more good ones (so far) this evening.
We've never tried growing a Pumpkin.
Mary MacADNski: They're fun to grow but take a bit of room.

I dunno about Canadian pumpkins (what types, etc). All our pumpkins love sun and some water. The more sun, the more flowers, but not all flowers turn to pumpkins. Depends if the sex workers did their work.
Mary MacADNski: These were already small pumpkins but when they got so big they shriveled and died. I see it every year but many more this year. It is a self protective mechanism to ensure the larger fruit reach maturity - the seed.
Great capture Mary. I love these flowers! We have red kuri squashes coming out very nicely in the garden.
Mary MacADNski: Now I don't know kuri at all. I like planting anything in the squash family.
ready for a cake, soon?
Mary MacADNski: Not until September or October.
Good close up, Mary. Worth a scratch or two.
Mary MacADNski: I'm not sure what that means but I assume it is good.
It's a jungle in there, Mary.
Mary MacADNski: It is! I found some new one this ebening.
