Putnam House

When I moved to my community thirty-six years ago, this was a beautiful house on the corner, once the doctor's office and residence.

A family bought it to fix up and sell, not for their residence. They wanted the house to face the other way so had a cement foundation poured, then turned and moved the house onto the foundation.  During the first winter the foundation fatally cracked and any work put in then or afterward just wouldn't help.

It has been twisting and leaning in for a number of years but this winter took it's toll. A first collapse and falling of half the porch roof happened mid-March

The top photos were taken on the 14th of May and the bottom on the 26th of May.

Wow ! What a shame.. So who pays for this then, Care.
Care MacADNski: A real estate developer bought this about ten years ago. The location is very good.
That is just so sad....
Care MacADNski: It was so full of history.

This is very sad Mary..
Care MacADNski: It really was. All the flowers still fill the property in summer.
Whoever laid the foundations has a lot to answer for!
Care MacADNski: With frost heaving, almost anything can happen.

It reminds me of the ‘Crazy House’ that I loved at the fair.
Care MacADNski: This one is full of old nails. I don't think I would get too close.

What a tragedy for what must have been a beautiful house, and how stupid. As a community you must be very angry
Care MacADNski: I think we are angry that nothing is being done about it. A neighbour told me people have been going there in the evening. It could be dangerous as it has collapsed much more after these two sessions.

What a fate, it is so sad that this old house collapsed.
Care MacADNski: It is even more so now. I must take more photos.
What a great shame, it does make one think that perhaps they should have left well alone in the first place.
Care MacADNski: I think the owner was very sorry but did try to make it work.
it doesn't seem as though they were to bright about the renovation Care...

this reminds me of the old grey wooden house that you shared with us for a few years as the roof sagged into the middle... when the sides caved in you were finished with your photojournalist series....petersmile
Care MacADNski: That old one took years to get that way. This one collapsed quickly by comparison.

Oh dear.. that is so sad. I wonder if they can get compensation from the firm that did the foundation? Asa matter of interest, if houses are not on a concrete foundation. what are they normally on?
Care MacADNski: This would have had an old sandstone block foundation. I think the previous owners did the work themselves. It was bought by someone else later.
Oh, good heavens, what a dreadful thing to happen - did they sue the concrete pourer?
Care MacADNski: I think they did it themselves.
